In celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, The Los Angeles (CA) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated proudly recognizes Betty G (Bruktawit Getahun)—a trailblazing Ethiopian singer and humanitarian whose music transcends borders and uplifts communities.
A globally recognized artist, Betty G has redefined international music, blending Amharic, French, and English lyrics with diverse musical influences, from jazz and rock to traditional Ethiopian sounds. Her critically acclaimed albums, Manew Fitsum (2015) and Wegegta (2018), not only dominated the charts but also earned her multiple All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), solidifying her as one of the most influential female artists in Eastern Africa.
Beyond her artistry, Betty G’s impact extends far beyond the stage. As a UNHCR high-profile supporter, she has worked tirelessly to advocate for refugee rights, particularly for women and children, using her voice to bring attention to the plight of displaced communities in Ethiopia and beyond. Her commitment to social justice was further recognized when she performed at the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, honoring Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Betty G represents the power of music as a vehicle for cultural exchange, social change, and empowerment. She stands as a beacon of inspiration for women and girls worldwide, proving that artistry and advocacy can go hand in hand in shaping a more just and equitable world.
💚 As we celebrate her achievements, we also reaffirm our commitment to uplifting the voices of Black women globally and championing those who use their platforms to drive meaningful change.
✨ Stay tuned as we continue to honor extraordinary Black women throughout March who are breaking barriers and making history every day.
